Last week, Karen attended the Chilean Ocean Islands Marine Ecosystems Conservation Initiative Workshop with Big Oceans to assist in initial development of a management plan for the Nazca-Desventuradas National Marine Park. The meeting which was hosted by the Ecology and Sustainable Management of Oceanic Islands (ESMOI) and the Universidad Catolica del Norte in Valparaiso, Chile, aimed to develop a management plan for the largest marine reserve in the Americas. Having previously worked on large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs) in Indonesia and South America, Karen was awarded an SMEA Wendy Graham travel scholarship to cover partial costs of attendance. The meeting was a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with government, scientists, and NGOs to develop a robust, inclusive management plan for a nearly 300,000 square kilometer MPA.
