Congratulations to first-year lab members, Karen Villeda and Lily Zhao who were presented two financial awards at SMEA’s 2017 graduation ceremony on June 8. Every year, the UW School of Marine and Environmental Affairs (SMEA) presents nominated first-year graduate students’ various awards based on their respective research, overall academic excellence, and involvement within SMEA.
This year, two MARINA lab members received achievement awards. Karen Villeda was awarded the Wedell O. Foss Fellowship and Lily Zhao was the recipient of the Sidney D. and Barbara F. Campbell Maritime Studies Endowed Fellowship. These awards honor SMEA graduate students who demonstrate excellence in their pursuit of studies with a waterfront or maritime orientation. Karen’s research will focus on how small-scale fisheries can more successfully complete fishery improvement projects and Lily’s research will center around the East African octopus’ trade.
